Eighteen people have been arrested in North Carolina in connection with a scheme to defraud Medicaid with false payments. According to the state Justice Department, thirteen home health employees, a speech therapist and operator of a group home have all been arrested on fraud charges.
The arrests were part of a statewide sweep to hold people accountable for allegedly defrauding Medicaid out of more than $500,000. One Guilford County man allegedly provided inaccurate information to Medicaid when applying for a home-care provide and billed more than $200,000 to Medicaid. The bills were for patients that were not living at the time they received the man’s care.
As federal law enforcement agencies investigate government benefits fraud, it’s likely that more and more arrests will follow. Attorney General Roy Cooper made clear that the arrests of 18 people for Medicaid fraud are only the beginning of a crackdown on fraud that harms other patients, the Medicaid system and taxpayers who support medical government benefits.
