Authorities hunt for sex offenders who didn’t register
By KevinMarcilliat, In Sex Crimes, 0 CommentsAbout a half hour’s drive from Raleigh, North Carolina, you’ll find Smithfield. The town is located in Johnston County. Recently, Johnston County sheriff’s deputies, as well as state and federal agents, have been locating wanted individuals. This included U.S. marshals and probation officers.
A local news station was invited to accompany authorities as they attempted to locate sex offenders who did not register as required and individuals with active warrants. Over 200 sex offenders were checked who live in Johnston County to make sure the addresses given on registration were actually where they were living.
One woman, 42, who was arrested is accused of taking indecent liberties with a child under the age of 16. She will appear on the felony charge before a magistrate.
One official with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said, “This operation strengthens and improves the information freely available in the state’s sex offender registry, public protection app and our online registry.”
In total, the three-say sweep resulted in 28 people getting arrested for a variety of crimes, such as murder, robbery and drugs.
If you are rounded in one of these operations, it’s important to remember your rights. While you should be polite, you should also invoke your right to remain silent and contact and attorney. This way, you won’t say anything that could be used against you in court.
If you have been convicted of a sex crime and were required to register, the lack of doing so can mean you are facing new charges. You can learn more about what happens if you do not register by speaking with your criminal attorney.
