Man gets 7 year prison sentence in federal sex crime case

February 18, 2016 | Federal Crimes

Recently in Raleigh, North Carolina, a man from Cary received a seven-year federal prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to using the Internet to promote prostitution and interstate transportation for prostitution.

Several undercover operations were utilized by the Cary Police Department in January 2013. They were alerted to possible illegal activity on backpage.com in the escort sections. During the investigation, police learned that the prostitution had been an ongoing occurrence from February 2012 to January 2015. The man who was charged is also believed to have operated a prostitution service in Georgia and Virginia as well.

Investigators said that the man, who is 29 years old, used violence, verbal threats and narcotics to control the women who worked for him. He allegedly took the women’s cellphones and identification cards so that they would have little contact with their family and friends, as well as with others.

The women that worked for the man were recruited through the use of Backpage. The man also received a 10-year sentence of supervised release once he has served the seven years in prison.

When facing criminal charges in federal court, it is important to have legal representation from someone who is experienced. Federal court procedures and laws are different from those at the local and state level. The penalties are also more severe for crimes charged in federal court.

Your attorney can provide information on whether a trial or plea is in your best interests. It is possible that a plea bargain may be offered as well. You can learn more from your attorney about how your federal case will likely progress.
